This week federal forecasters reported that the La Niña climate pattern is forecast to return this fall, and they’re already saying it will probably last through the winter of 2021-22.

The Path of La Niña
For those who may be unfamiliar, La Niña- which means little girl in Spanish- is the name given to a natural weather cycle marked by cooler-than-average seawater in the central Pacific Ocean. It also happens to be one of the main drivers of weather in the U.S. and around the world, especially during the late fall, winter and early spring.

During La Niña events, trade winds are even stronger than usual, pushing more warm water toward Asia. Off of the Americas west coast this increases upwelling, which brings cold, nutrient-rich water to the surface. In the Pacific, these cold waster push the jet stream northward. For the Pacific Northwest and Canada, this means heavy rains and flooding, with northern parts of the world experiencing a colder winter.
